Alitalia Express
To secure an effective presence in every segment of the market, Alitalia proceeded in 1996 to establish Alitalia Express, a subsidiary specializing in regional air transport. Operational since 1997, this carrier employs around 700 people (including 315 pilots and 213 flight attendants), serves 28 domestic and European destinations and flies some two million passengers each year.

The aim of Alitalia Express is to meet air-travel demand from passengers anywhere in Italy or Europe by developing point-to-point connections between medium-sized airports as well as between these and large international and intercontinental hubs. The company operates a fleet of thirty aircraft in an ideal mix of twenty jets (made by Brazil's Embraer and with an average seating capacity of 58) and ten turboprops.

In particular, the twin-engine Embraer 170, which came into service in April 2004, was chosen by Alitalia Express to cope with seasonal waves of passenger traffic. One of the plane's main strengths is its very comfortable cabin. As a mark of respect for one particular category of flyers, a special card containing safety instructions in Braille is provided in the seat-pocket on Embraer 170 flights.
