What is ELTA?
ELTA is a leading news agency in the Baltic. It is a dynamic and modern national news agency with a tradition built on long years of experience.

The agency offers timely and accessible coverage of the main domestic and global news. Twenty-four hours a day, the online service at www.elta.lt generates a continuous flow of Lithuanian and foreign news stories on politics, business, sports, culture, and entertainment.

The ELTA team is composed of experienced reporters, photographers, translators, and editors. They work to deliver the reports of the world's leading news agencies: Reuters of United Kingdom, DPA of Germany, and the agencies in neighboring countries such as Russia's ITAR-TASS, Latvia's LETA, Poland's PAP and others. News in Lithuanian is dispatched to customers in Lithuania and in English and Russian to customers worldwide. The supplier of images from abroad is the European Photo Agency EPA. The photo service of ELTA stores more than 100,000 archived photos dating back to 1985.

Every morning, ELTA issues a daily diary of the upcoming political, business, and cultural events. The service also includes reviews of the national and global press. The agency offers surveys of public opinion and interviews with political analysts and opinion makers. The business news service features domestic business news, regular updates of the national and global stock exchanges, currency exchange rates, and international business stories. Since 1996, the entire news service has been archived in a database that is available to customers.

ELTA's history
ELTA was founded in 1920. Juozas Eretas, the first director of the agency, a literature professor, publicist, and public figure of Swiss decent sought to make the ELTA news wire as efficient and reliable as a Swiss watch. In 1920-1940, ELTA had cooperated closely with the most prominent foreign agencies - its five teletypes used to send news from REUTER, DNB, HAVAS, STEFANI and TASS.

When Soviet troops occupied Lithuania in 1940, ELTA was incorporated as a part of the USSR information service known as TASS and relayed news from Moscow over the period 1940-1990.

With the recovery of national sovereignty in 1990, ELTA also re-established its independence and direct contacts with leading global agencies.

In 1996, ELTA became an independent national news agency.
