GSM Aland Finland
The ‘¯?land Islands and its telecommunications

The ‘¯?land Islands consist of a group of islands in the Baltic Sea between Finland and Sweden. The islands belong to Finland even though the population of 26.000 people is swedish speaking to over 95%. The ‘¯?land Islands have a system of self determination, an autonomous province in Finland.

For the fixed telecommunications there are two local telephone companies, Mariehamns Telefon Ab (telecom operator since 1892) and ‘¯?lands Telefonandelslag (telecom operator since 1910), on the islands. These two companies operate over 90% of the 20.000 local lines. Sonera, the Finnish PTT, operate 10% of the local lines.

In 1989 Mariehamns Telefon Ab and ‘¯?lands Telefonandelslag founded ‘¯?lands Mobiltelefon Ab. ‘¯?lands Mobiltelefon Ab owns regional licenses to operate both GSM- and UMTS-networks on the islands. ‘¯?lands Mobiltelefon Ab has been running a GSM-network since 1993. The number of subscribers is for the moment about 13.000. ‘¯?lands Mobiltelefon Ab is a member of the GSM Association.

Since May 2001 ‘¯?lands Mobiltelefon Ab run our own independent GPRS-compatible GSM-network with own network codes, with international roaming and with national roaming with those Finnish operators, which do not have, own licenses on the islands.

EDGE will be supported from Q2/2005, and in Q3/2005 UMTS(3G) will be available in our network.

‘¯?lands Mobiltelefon Ab have more than 55% of the mobile market on the ‘¯?land Islands.
