Largely due to the nature of the colors on the official flag of Greece it is popularly referred to as the Ïblue whiteÓ. The flag consists of horizontal stripes blue and white placed at equal intervals and they are 9 in number. These 9 strips represent the 9 syllables of the phrase which reads as follows:
"??e??e??a ? T??at??" this phrase means Freedom or Death . Another particular theory that is in circulation says that the 9 stripes represent the 9 Muses of Classical mythology who depicted art and civilization.

The flag is set against an azure background with a Greek cross . The blue has varied from dark to light throughout the centuries but ultimately the dark blue shade was opted for as late as 1960's. The present design of the flag owes its origin to the official flag adopted by the First National Assembly at Epidaurus in the January of 1822. The colors blue and white is also said to represent the waters and skies of Greece which adds to its natural beauty.
