How to Export to Suriname
Import Regs.: Licenses/Prohibited/Restrictions

On September 1, 1999 the Government of Suriname (GOS) removed licensing requirements for most imports and exports, an important next step in trade liberalization. A limited number of banned goods (narcotics, nuclear material) and goods requiring a license or certificate remain.

The licensing system was replaced for all imported goods with a "negative list," which is divided into banned goods and goods requiring a license from the Ministry of Trade and Industry or a certificate from the Ministry of Health and Agriculture.

Importers are eligible for a license as long as they fulfil the relevant requirements. Applications for the licences must be submitted to the Import, Export and Foreign Exchange Control Department of the Ministry of Trade and Industry, which must process the licence within 15 days. The authorities indicated that in practice, licences for which the Ministry of Trade and Industry does not need to seek the advice of another government agency are issued in one or two days. Licences are valid for three months and are not transferable.

Imports requiring a certificate from the Ministries of Health or Agriculture, Animal Husbandry and Fisheries: medicines, micro-organisms, waste materials, refrigerators, air conditioners and all apparatus containing fluorocarbons and pesticides. The Government of Suriname removed a ban of imported poultry products from the U. S. on August 1, 2004.
