As Northeast Asia's role in the global marketplace continues to expand, the quest for leadership in the regional economy is heightening the competition to attract foreign investment.
Foreign direct investment (FDI) plays a key role in national economies in terms of adding to the capital stock of a country, enhancing its productive capability, introducing new and innovative technology as well as management techniques, and broadening marketing and distribution channels globally. For this reason, FDI has and continues to be viewed as a vital element in the economic life of Korea, and Invest KOREA is working to be at the forefront of the national drive to attract investment and encourage the expansion of international corporations.

FDI was a key contributor to helping Korea overcome the 1997 financial crisis and restructure its economy. Many Korean companies would not have survived the crisis without the inflow of foreign capital, which also brought with it new technologies and management practices, as well as access to the global distribution networks of multinational companies. About 15,300 foreign-invested companies in Korea employed almost one out of 10 local workers as of 2006, accounting for 15 percent of total industrial production and 13.2 percent of exports in the manufacturing sector.

Invest KOREA carries out investment-related tasks ranging from attracting investors to offering aftercare services.
