The flag of Cote d' Ivoire was officially adopted on December 3, 1959. The design and vertical positions of colors is based on the French tricolor. There are two theories to the symbolic significance of the colors of the Cote d' Ivoire flag . According to one of them, orange represents the savannahs of the north and green stands for coastal forests. White symbolizes rivers of the country. According to the Presidency of the Republic, orange stands for the color of the land, rich and generous, blood of young people fighting for emancipation and meaning of their fight for freedom. White symbolizes peace and green is for hope and the certainty of a bright future.
