Southern Air
Founded in Norwalk, Connecticut, Southern Air Inc. is a low-cost cargo airline offering wide-body air freight services through its fleet of B747 freighter aircraft. The company was formed in 1999 when it acquired certain assets relating to the long-haul, heavy-lift freighter operations of Southern Air Transport, Inc. of Columbus, Ohio. Building on TransportÌs fifty years of air cargo expertise and high level of service, Southern has been able to successfully grow a fleet of General Electric powered B747-200FsÛamong the most efficient, heavy-lift freighter aircraft in the world. The company specializes in long-haul, heavy-lift operations for ACMI (aircraft, crew, maintenance and insurance) and charter customers.
The companyÌs management team is led by Jim Neff, SouthernÌs founder and its President and Chief Executive Officer, as well as Tom Gillies, Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer, and Brian Neff, Chief Financial Officer. All of SouthernÌs management team and employees have extensive experience in conducting B747F aircraft operations and providing all-cargo air transportation services to both the public and the government. On average, members of the senior management team have over 20 years experience in the commercial air cargo industry, and the companyÌs crewmembers also average over 20 years experience in heavy jet operations.
The companyÌs customer base consists of both commercial and governmental customers operating under ACMI and charter contracts. Southern has flown ACMI programs for some of the worldÌs largest international carriers, and has the capabilities to seamlessly integrate with a customerÌs existing freight operations.
With regard to maintenance and operations, Southern utilizes sophisticated engineering and scheduling program technologies to reduce downtime and maximize operational flexibility. The company provides its own line maintenance with qualified company personnel supported by contract maintenance personnel as required.
The dedication and work ethic of SouthernÌs employees, combined with its uniform and high-yielding fleet of aircraft, allows it to provide reliable, high-value freight service to its customers. It is the companyÌs goal to continue to be the most reliable and flexible air cargo alternative within the industry.
