The beginning of Radio & Television Tonga
Tonga Broadcasting Commission (TBC) is the first Broadcasting Station in the Kingdom, which began operations in 1961. The government of Tonga solely owns TBC. It became a statutory board in 1975 in order to become financially assistance from Government except for the first time in 2002. TBC is now governed by the Government Public Enterprise Act. Tonga Broadcasting Commission provides commercial and non-commercial services.
TBC operates the only AM Station in Tonga that reaches all its outer islands. It also operates one FM Station for the mainland only. TBC also owns one Television Station, which was recently established in 2001. A radio shop is also operation to supplement the financial survival of TBC.
TBC currently employs a total of 75 staffs under its operation. A Board of Directors oversees the policy management of the Tonga Broadcasting Commission. A General Manager is employed and responsible for recommending and implementing strategies and policies and the day to day management.
