Mission Statement of AB Haber (EU News)

EU-Turkey information network ABHaber (EUNews) is an independent, non-profit organisation, founded by a group of journalists and scholars in Belgium. ABHaber gained its legal, non-profit organisational status in the year 2002. Its partner ABHaber Turkey is founded in 2006.

The basic aim of ABHaber is to promote EU-Turkey relations, initially through an EU-Turkey information network and a discussion platform: The portal of ABHaber.com.

Aims of the ABHaber are

Turkey’s relations with Europe have suffered ongoing tensions, for various reasons. Public surveys indicate that a considerable number of Turkish people feel that Europe is not to be trusted, and Western Europeans tend to be suspicious of Turks and Turkey’s EU membership. According to the same public surveys there is also a great lack of information on both sides about “the other”. Although among Turkish people, EU membership is greatly supported, the awareness of EU related matters are very low. All these indicate that much of the cyclical tensions stem from mutual misunderstandings, prejudices, lack of information or unrealistic expectations.

ABHaber.com, intends to offer an “alternative information source” on EU and Turkish affairs through an independent, objective information network.

ABHaber.com’s general aim is to facilitate Turkey’s EU integration, by meeting the information requirement of a wide community of people influencing this process (decision-makers, professionals, NGOs, the media.)

For these purposes we

-provide up-to-date news and in depth information on each and every aspect of Turkey’s EU integration.

-act as a platform for discussions on EU-Turkey affairs.

-monitor the reform process in Turkey, developments in civil society and in the field of human rights.

-support civil initiatives promoting democratisation, human rights and pluralism.

-promote media content exchanges and co-production with other European media to encourage the media to make a constructive contribution to EU-Turkey relations.

-promote EU-Turkey media personnel meetings and sustainable contacts.
