Air Burkina
February 21 2001, the state of Burkina Faso yielded 86% actions of the company AIR BURKINA to the Consortium akefd/ips (WA) Agan Khan Development network.
This privatization operation was the object of three conventions:
1. A convention agreeing to the privatization with the new owner engaging himself to assure the continuation of the exploitation of the aerial transportation to the Burkina Faso, through a business plan including notably the reinforcement of the fleet by a second Fokker F-28. The consortium akfed/ips (WA) also agreed to preserve all the contractual personnel of the corporation with the advantages obtained previously.
2. A Concession Convention of traffic that sets up the conditions and methods of the exploitation and development of the regular public aerial services both interiors and /or international through the Concession of the aerial traffic rights. This Convention is concluded for a duration of twenty (20) years with an exclusivity rights of five (5) years in the Aerial Unique Exploitation Zone (ZEAU).
3. A Convention transferring the control of the corporation AIR BURKINA to the Consortium akfed/ips (WA). Being the major shareholder in the company allows the Consortium to contribute to the development of aerial transportation in West Africa and to therefore take part in the improvement of the means of communication in the region.
The Burkina Faso is equipped with two international airports which are OUAGADOUGOU and BOBO-DIOULASSO handling respectively 216.000 and 17.000 passengers each year (excluding transit passengers).
The commercial freight represents roughly 7.000 tons for OUAGADOUGOU and 98 tons for BOBO-DIOULASSO. Compared to other capitals in the region, the amount of freight handled in OUAGADOUGOU remains rather modest.
The market of the aerial transportation is growing steadily and both the economical development and the economical integration (UEMOA) in the region are improving the exchanges of goods and persons.
The company AIR BURKINA was created in 1967. Since the transfer of ownership took place in February 21 2001, the capital has been increased to 3,5 billion FCFA.
