Local News Coverage
The Asian Journal writes about the Filipino American experience and culture in the United States, most specifically in San Diego, CA. We cover overseas news relevant to all Filipino Americans and local news affecting the immediate community.
Filipino
We know the Filipino mind. We know what works and what does not work. The nuance is like a tantalizing sip of green mango shake. It makes the yellow ripeness of fruit feel like an idea that has been left out on the shelf for days.
Bilingual
The Asian Journal is published in English and Filipino. It also features content and advertisements in grammatically pure Pilipino, or the hybrid form of "Tag-lish" a combination of the two languages, English and Tagalog AKA Filipino.
Quality of Content
The reasons why the Asian Journal is the paper of choice for many Filipino Americans since 1987 vary. However, as journalists, we can only vouch for the quality of our content and our balanced news coverage as important to our mission. Our columnists include local Filipino American residents who are experts in their fields and are respected community leaders. Our coverage of the 2007 San Diego Wildfires has been featured in New America Media, a national ethnic media syndicate, and other news sites. The Asian Journal also writes about the immigrant experience of living in two cultures, stories relevant to Filipino residents and other multi-ethnic residents of San Diego County.
Fairness and Balance
During the last election, we featured a voter’s guide that presented our readers with a balanced view of the elections by including positions of various opposing candidates on the issues.
In the interest of fairness, the Asian Journal does not endorse political campaigns or political action committee agendas in the guise of headline news for monetary or political gain. We are grateful for the freedom of the press in this regard and honor the responsibilities of a free press in a democratic nation.
Extensive Distribution Network
The Asian Journal and its sister publication Philippines Today are published on Fridays and Wednesdays respectively. This gives advertisers maximum exposure in the Filipino American community in San Diego County. The County's Filipino household is a high-income group ($80K-plus per household) according to the 2006 American Community Survey. It is also the largest ethnic market after the Hispanic market. Census trends show the Filipino American population as one of the fastest growing communities among Asian groups in the nation and in the state.
We can get you into communities with the largest number of Filipinos residents based on our extensive distribution network.
Original
We are an original. We are still an original even after twenty years in the business. While other start-ups got into the business by chance from other fields, we are journalists. We play fair. We present balanced views.
Asian Journal is minority owned and is certified with the State of California as a small business enterprise. We are the recipient of awards from various government, public and business organizations.
