Germany Flags flagoftheworld
The present German Flag dates back to May 9, 1949 and is somewhat similar to the flag of Weimar Republic . Although the German flag was adopted as a federal flag but it was put to civil use on 14 August, 1950. The tricolor consisting of the colors red, yellow and black is also used as the merchant ensign. The naval ensign is also not very different with just the naval flag being swallow-tailed.

Before being given official status, the German tricolor was also used earlier in German history in 1848 but eventually discarded in 1952 and further re-adopted in 1919 as the flag of the Weimar Republic. The original tricolor had added to its structure a coat of arms in the years from 1959 to 1989. The colors on the flag is more a depiction of liberal nationalism in Germany and not republicanism as is thought by most people.
