In terms of its facilities Devau Airport was one of the best airports of its time, it had spacious airplane sheds, a centralized fuel injection system and a well drained airfield. Due to its even airfield Devau Airport was increasingly used for flights of the first flying machines, in 1913 the French aviator Louis Bleriot who was the first to cross the English Channel by air, made his demonstration flights there. Before World War I Devau was transformed into a military base.
At the beginning of World War II the airport was transferred under the command of Luftwaffe. The last passenger flight Konigsberg was made on 27 January 1945 when the city was almost besieged.
When the war was over the famous Devau received its functions of a civil airport of Kaliningrad in autumn, 1945.
In the early 60s jet airplanes were gradually replacing piston-driven planes. Since it had no concrete surfaces, no jet airplanes could land in Devau. In place of Devau, an airfield of Khrabrovo was chosen that was then managed jointly with the military. Khrabrovo Airport was initially Luftwaffe's airfield Powunden in February, 1945 the famous Normandy Neman Squadron was deployed. In the early 50s a concrete 2,000 m runway and taxiways had been constructed on the ground airfield. Old concrete taxiways blended into the new general airfield scheme and were used as such in the Soviet times.
In 1973 construction of a new complex for Khrabrovo Airport and reconstruction of the runway and taxiways were launched. The total length of the runway amounted to 2,500 m. .
On 17 July 1979 an official opening of the first order of Kaliningrad Airport new complex took place. Airport personnel received a symbolic key to the airport. Kaliningrad obtained a modern passenger airport that demonstrated excellent performance at the peak of air transportations in the 80s.
At the turn of the century Kaliningradavia OJSC launched an ambitious program for qualitative transformation of the airport complex as a whole: reconstruction of the passenger terminal that will have a capacity of more than 2.5 mln passengers per year and will comply with the highest international standards.
On 7 July 2005 an official ceremony was held the first pole for the new terminal was driven into the ground. The new terminal is designed in such as a way that it will have a capacity of up to 2 mln passengers a year, with an emphasis to be placed on transit passengers of both domestic and international flights. The terminal will function so that transfer times remain at their lowest. The terminal will experience daily two peak periods: in the morning when passengers of domestic flights arrive to continue their trip to Europe and in the evening when passengers of international flights travel to Russian cities.
On 14 June the first order of a new 4,532 sq. m. terminal was put into operation. The terminal has a capacity of approx. 900-1,000 passengers per hour. In the future when the following orders of the terminal and new equipment are put into operation, the terminal will be able to service of up to 1,700 passengers per hour.
The second part of the airport complex is currently being constructed and it will be put into operation in late 2009.
