JAPANESE DELEGATION TO VISIT CENTRAL ASIA TO DISCUSS ENERGY ISSUES
A delegation of to Japanese business leaders, academics and government officials will visit Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan and Azerbaijan on a two-week tour this year to help develop a long-term relationship with the Central Asian region and help bolster Japan's energy security, Japanese Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi said at the opening of an Asian economic forum in China on April 12. The team, dubbed the "Silk Road Energy Mission", will consist of ten people. Koizumi cited the region's "great potential as a source of energy" and Japan's growing dependence on the Middle East for its energy supplies as the reasons for the trip. Japan currently imports more than 80% of its energy supply, 85% of which is crude oil from the Middle East, Kyodo news agency reported.
