Collaboration agreements with Brazil, Argentina and Chile

The Norwegian Minister of Higher Education and Research Tora Aasland has signed agreements on research collaboration and higher education with her colleagues in Brazil, Argentina and Chile. The agreements lay the basis for closer collaboration in areas such as climate and polar research. Exchange of researchers and students will also play a central role.

John Griggs Thompson and Jacques Tits
Thompson and Tits share the Abel Prize for 2008

The Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters has decided to award the Abel Prize for 2008 to John Griggs Thompson, University of Florida and Jacques Tits, CollÀge de France. This was announced by the AcademyÌs President, Ole Didrik L rum, at a press conference in Oslo today. Thompson and Tits receives the Abel Prize Ïfor their profound achievements in algebra and in particular for shaping modern group theoryÓ.

Holberg International Memorial Prize

The Holberg Prize is awarded annually for outstanding scientific work within the fields of the arts and humanities, social sciences, law and theology, or interdisciplinary work within these areas. The Royal Highness Crown Prince Haakon presented the Holberg Prize 2007 to Ronald Dworkin.

South AfricaÌs Minister of Science and Technology, Mosibudi Mangena, visited his Norwegian colleague Tora Aasland from the 30th of October Ò 1st of November to celebrate 10 years academic relation between South Africa and Norway.

- A proactive budget for NorwayÌs knowledge economy

The Norwegian Government intends to create 350 new fellowships to boost recruitment of scientists and academics. The Government also intends to increase the capital of the Research and Innovation Fund to NOK 66 billion in 2008. Total budget allocations to research and development will increase by NOK 1.2 billion. More student residences and increased student funding are also on the GovernmentÌs agenda for 2008.

Polish-Norwegian Research fund launched

Poland and Norway launch a joint research fund to encourage bilateral Polish-Norwegian research co-operation. The Polish-Norwegian research fund specifically earmarks the fields of environment and health.
