About the agencyThe Slovenian Press Agency (STA) is a key source of daily information for Slovenian media outlets and the entire Slovenian public, as well as the main source of information on events in Slovenia for foreign press agencies and major international media. STA services (the General News Service in Slovenian, the daily English Service and the Picture Service) are also used by institutions of the state, corporate users, embassies and other users.

The STA is also the only provider of daily news in English for the expatriate community in Slovenia and for English-speaking readers abroad.

Speed, objectivity and credibility are the guiding principles in STA reporting.

With over 100 full-time employees and part-time contributors based in Ljubljana, and its network of correspondents in major cities across Slovenia and in Brussels, New York, Zagreb, Rome, Klagenfurt and Trieste, the STA provides comprehensive coverage of events in Slovenia and around the world. The agency also exchanges news wires with leading press agencies around the world and uses multiple other foreign sources of news.

A. STA's main services
1. STA General News Service in Slovenian
The General News Service in Slovenian is the main source of up-to-the-minute information for Slovenian and foreign media, state institutions, diplomatic representations, companies, non-governmental organisations and other users. Each day the General News Service provides up to 300 reports, features, press reviews and other news items covering domestic policy, business, international affairs, EU affairs, arts and sports.

The General News Service is divided into the following categories:

Slovenia: foreign and domestic policy news, key events, decisions and changes in the corporate sector, health, education, science and culture, and the latest society news;
European Union: news about activities and the latest developments in EU institutions and Slovenia's activities in the EU;
International: the latest political, economic and social news worldwide;
Business and Economy: the latest business news from Slovenia and abroad, including reports and analysis of financial markets;
Arts and culture: news bringing the pulse of cultural events in Slovenia and abroad;
Sport: news on national-level sporting events as well as major international competitions;
Health: health news ranging from health policy to the latest scientific discoveries in this field;
Education and science: news on the latest in education and science in Slovenia, and achievements in research, development and innovation in Slovenia and abroad;

Daily and weekly roundups of major events
Comprehensive roundups of the most important events of the day or week in Slovenia and internationally. In addition to final roundups at the end of the daily news cycle, the STA releases three interim roundups of international events (at 8:30 AM, 1:30 PM and 5:30 PM), two interim roundups of events in Slovenia (at 1:30 PM and 5:30 PM) and two interim roundups of sports events (at noon and 5:30 PM).

2. STA English News Service
The English News Service is the leading English-language source – and the only daily source – of the latest news on Slovenia. The team of journalists and translators prepares up to 50 daily news items, interviews, press reviews and other contributions, providing unique and up-to-date insight into Slovenian politics, business, society, culture and sport.

Aside from events in Slovenia, the English Service reports on Slovenia’s international activities, with special focus on the European Union, Southeastern Europe and international organisations. It also provides comprehensive business and economic policy news, and reporting on the forays of Slovenian companies in foreign markets.

The main source of the English Service News is the General News Service in Slovenian, which is complemented by original reporting and reviews of the Slovenian press.

Since it was launched in 1994 as an independent editorial department, it has been expanding coverage and bringing reporting up to global press agency standards. The English Service strives for accuracy, speed and clarity.

The English News Service is divided into the following categories:

Comprehensive roundups of the most important events in Slovenia and foreign events involving Slovenia. In addition to the final daily roundup, interim roundups are released daily at 3 PM and 6 PM.

3. STA Picture Service
The STA Picture Service provides daily images from major political, business, cultural and sports events, and it captures in image form the latest entertainment and human interest stories. Photographs are produced by experienced staff photographers and STA's correspondents from Slovenia and abroad but the STA also has an international exchange of photographies with partner agencies (Itar Tass, Xinhua, Beta, Tanjug, Hina, Telam).

Covering between 20 and 25 major events, the STA Picture Service produces over 200 high quality photographs daily. The number is even higher for special events such as Olympic Games or Slovenian elections. The STA Picture Archive contains over 85,000 press photographs capturing life in Slovenia since 2005.

B. Specialised STA services
Aside from the daily news, schedules and roundups in English and Slovenian, the STA provides specialised and on-demand services. For major events such as Slovenia's EU presidency, Olympic Games, the introduction of the euro and elections, the STA provides a special in-depth news service with a dedicated team of journalists and contributors. The STA also provides on-demand information services such as the production of special publications or on-demand photo coverage.

1. Daily Bulletin in Slovenian
The STA's Daily Bulletin in Slovenian offers a compact and informative overview of major domestic and international events, features, schedules of events in Slovenia and around the world, as well as a daily review of the press and reporting by foreign press agencies on Slovenia. The bulletin is published in electronic Sunday through Friday. Subscribers receive it daily by 11 PM.

2. Special coverage (free content)
The STA provides special coverage which is available free of charge to all visitors and includes thematic news on key domestic and international events, placing special emphasis on events that have a significant impact on the political and economic development of Slovenia and Slovenia's role in the international environment. This also allows the public to obtain information on the opinions expressed by leading politicians, executives and social and cultural opinion makers.

3. EU News (free content)
In making EU-related content available free of charge to all visitors of its website, the STA wanted to bring the activities, decisions and opinions of EU institutions, and Slovenia's activities in the European Union, as close as possible to the general public. The STA made Slovenia's efforts to join the EU a priority as early as in 1995, when it chose Brussels for its first international bureau. Daily news on the EU and Slovenia's activities in this field are complemented by backgrounds and special features in the run-up to major events, interviews with leading Slovenian and European decision-makers as well as schedules and roundups of major events.

4. Info Ticker STA-AND (agency news of the day)
The Info Ticker STA-AND is a new and technologically advanced product providing web pages with the summaries of the latest news prepared by the STA journalists. It is intended for websites which want to offer their visitors the up-to-the-minute domestic and international news in compact form in order to boost page visits and improve the informative content of their pages. The info ticker automatically displays the last five news item in the General News Service in Slovenian or English, or news on individual topics (business, Slovenia, international, sport, arts) as per request.

5. News Alerts STA-AND (agency news of the day)
for TV stations

News Alerts STA-AND is designed to complement the programming content of TV stations. It is intended for national as well as regional and local TV stations which want to offer their viewers current, short and accurate information on the latest domestic and international events.
