Shoal Air
New charter airline
The Kimberley has a new charter airline based in Kununurra - Shoal Air.

It was started by local architect Steve Irvine, who has been flying around the Kimberley for 19 years, using aircraft as an integral part of his architectural and project management business.

Based in the old Kingfisher hangar, east of the main Kununurra Airport terminal, the airline presently has two high performance aircraft: a twin engine Cessna 310, which cruises at 330 kilometres an hour and a Mooney 231, which cruises at 305 kilometres an hour.

Steve hopes to expand in the future with a pressurised craft.
The airline will focus on corporate charters, mostly for passengers, but won't rule out cargo.

It will provide charters for remote communities, government services, mining and industry.

Steve said the aircraft were fast and efficient and capable of giving comfort in seasonal and turbulent conditions.

The Cessna features state of the art avionics including storm scope and moving map GPS.

It is capable of performing night-time charters.

"We are keen to be given the opportunity to quote for organisations," Steve said last week.
"We saw there was room for another operator and competition is good for the general public."

The chief pilot for the Shoal Air is Sue Rogers, a qualified Grade 1 (the highest) instructor.

She has been flying for 12 years and has notched up more than 3500 hours.

She has flown extensively over many regions in Australia and the Torres Strait.

Sue said Shoal Air would concentrate on the Kimberley and the Victoria River District, but would also consider charters to just about anywhere.
