Since its foundation on November 5, 1943 as the Telegraph Agency of the New Yugoslavia, Tanjug has reflected the fate of the country which won the battle for peace in 1945 together with its allies, building and rebuilding the war-ravaged country afterwards and, during the 1990s, fought and broke up.

Tanjug's photo archives are ranked among the best in Europe and contain over three million negatives testifying about historic events.
Tanjug is a member of the European Association of News Agencies (EANA), the Association of Mediterranean News Agencies (AMAN), the Association of Balkan News Agencies - Southeast Europe (ABNA) and the Black Sea Association of National News Agencies (BSANNA) and takes part in the work of the World Congress of News Agencies founded in Moscow in 2004.
