TehranAvenue started its operation in 2001. We ventured into a new medium with the aim of establishing a small city magazine. The small group of young writers who originally contributed to the magazine has now grown into a sizable community. They are trying to focus on issues that official or established media seldom do. In the various sections of TehranAvenue, or in its back alleys if you prefer, the visitor will come upon a new language that is trying to push the limits of understanding and not simply stay within the confines of communication.

TehranAvenue is bilingual. The reasons are many. Two of them follow.

Lingua franca - The Internet is dominated by the English language, no doubt reflecting the political, cultural, and economic influence of the post-industrial Anglo-Saxon countries.

Expatriation - In the two decades in particular, the number of Iranians migrating abroad has increased exponentially. Whatever the reasons, the second generation of Iranians born outside the country are more comfortable with the language of the country they were born or raised in. We use English to reach out to them.

Articles that appear in TehranAvenue are divided into three main (1/ The Art, 2/ Editor's Corner, and 3/ Around Town) sections. The Economic News is provided by Atieh Bahar Consulting Company in Tehran.

ART & LITERATURE
Theater - Many events take place in and around the City Theater in central Tehran. The evaluation and review of some the pieces taking the stage in Tehran is the aim of this section.

Exhibit - Tehran is not only the political capital of the country but its artistic one, the point of landing and departure of the arts. There are many artists whose works are not reflected in the established media. The writers of this section are focusing on those artists that are not in the news as much.

Film - The Seventh Art is the most sought-after and visible art. Our "Film Guide" is a short, witty review of film on screen. Occasionally, we introduce artists and issues that are outside the purview of the established media.

Literature - The material of this section are provided by Jahan-e Ketab literary magazine. This magazine is one of the most acclaimed publications dealing with published books in Iran.

Music - Social changes in Iran, especially in recent years, has affected the music scene in a country were early in the revolution music was looked upon with suspicion. The quantitative growth of pop music, the transformation of classical Persian music, and the re-emergence of rock and alternative music cannot be left unattended.

EDITOR'S CHOICE
Editorial - Much like in other magazines, the TehranAvenue editorial reflects the general view of the magazine on issues of the day.

Feature - What distinguishes this section from others is the multifaceted treatment of the subject in question. Several contributors usually give their take on an issue, back up by additional material.

AROUND TOWN

Cafe - Tehran has changed drastically in recent decades. From new expressways to commercial billboards, the face of the city has transmogrified. Public spaces where people spend their time in have mushroomed. These public spaces have redefined people's attitude towards their city. TehranAvenue's cafe section introduces restaurants and coffee shops that have flourished in the city.
Citylog - One of the characteristics of TehranAvenue articles is their brevity. We were always looking for a way to talk about seemingly insignificant city events in virtual space. Citylog is our way of doing it. The short pieces of this section may be written from an individual's point of view, but they are not personal. Readers will see the viewpoint of TehranAvenue team in the section.

TECHNICAL ISSUES AND THE PERSIAN LANGUAGE
Browsers and Farsi - The Persian language can be accessed by many Operating Systems, although discrepancies may exist when it is view by different browsers. There is a button above the main text of each article that will bring the Farsi script to the reader.

To view the files in Persian you will need a browser that can support Unicode. Most recent browsers do that, including Internet Explorer 5+ and the Netscape family browsers (Mozilla, Firefox and Netscape). You can contact us if you run into problems viewing pages.
