About Us - History
UBTA-UBET Communications, formerly known as Uintah Basin Telephone Association, boasts a history rich with determination, dedication, and hard work. From the company's humble beginnings back in 1948, to our present date, UBTA-UBET Communications has evolved into a company of over 30,000 customers. We offer not only local telephone service but also Cellular, PCS, Paging, DSS Satellite, Internet and Long Distance service.

It all began in 1948, when residents outside the boundaries of Roosevelt and Duchesne were told they could not receive telephone service because construction charges were too prohibitive. One determined man by the name of E. Floyd Ross organized a Board of Directors consisting of 7 other ranchers and farmers. Each represented a locality in the basin. The objective of the Board was to create a cooperative that would supply telephone service to the Uintah Basin.

By the time Congress passed the Telephone Act in 1949, Uintah Basin Telephone Association was already incorporated and ready to provide service. On June 1, 1953, Uintah Basin telephone turned up service to their first customers. At that time, Uintah Basin Telephone's service area extended over 100 miles from end to end and boasted over 750 customers.

Uintah Basin Telephone Association continued to be aware of the needs of their customers. In 1989, a subsidiary of the company named UBET Wireless was formed to bring cellular and wireless services to the residents of the Uintah Basin. In 1992, the company foresaw the opportunities available through fiber-optic technology. As a result, each high school in Duchesne County was equipped with an interactive classroom connected to a fiber-optic network. Students in the Uintah Basin now have a wider variety of classes available to them, including college classes, via the Internet and the distance-learning program. Also in 1992, due to requests by our customers to provide clearer TV reception & satellite TV for Duchesne and Uintah Counties, another subsidiary named UBTV was created. In 1995, UBTANet was formed to offer residents of the Basin local Internet access in their homes and businesses. In 1997, UBLD went online to provide long distance telephone service to our customers. In 2001, UBTA-UBET Communications acquired the Roosevelt, Vernal and Duchesne exchanges from Qwest. UBTA-UBET Communications now serves the entire Uintah Basin.

UBTA-UBET Communications has a rich heritage of dedicated individuals from the original 8 members of the Board of Directors, to our current Board of Directors and employees numbering over 145. UBTA-UBET Communications is just as dedicated to bringing the best possible service and newest communication technologies to the residents of the Uintah Basin today.
